Yogic Sleep Pose

Yoganidrasana or Yogic Sleep Pose looks strange and painful!

This pose would likely scare away many students from the thought of practicing yoga. Of course, yoga is about much more than flexibility, but Yoganidrasana is a pose that requires the feet being placed behind the head! It is believed that yogis once slept in this position, which explains the name. The name translates as “yoga” meaning “to unite”, “nidra” meaning “sleep” and “asana” meaning “pose”.

Yogic Sleep Pose is actually considered a forward bend while in the supine position. The term supine refers to lying on your back while facing upward. If you look closely at the pose, it does resemble a deep Standing Forward Bend Pose with the head pulled between the legs. Yoganidrasana is also a member of the Ashtanga series of poses.

Benefits of the posture include aiding the spine in a variety of ways not limited to stretching, toning, and flexibility. Other benefits include reducing stress and tension while increasing focus and a calm mind. It’s also possible for the pose to help increase blood circulation. Standing Forward Bend Pose, Downward Facing Dog Pose, Foot Behind The Head Pose (Eka Pada Sirsasana), and Extended Side Angle (Parsvakonasana) can act as good prep poses for Yoganidrasana. Major Tips: Make sure to warm up before trying this pose. For most students this posture is considered advanced and should never be forced. Breathing is critical to Yoganidrasana, if you begin to feel stressed during the process of the posture, back out of the pose. You should seek help from an instructor with your first attempt at this posture.
